Oxford

Hotel was nice although the bar a little expensive and the rooms on the snug size! Perfect location 2 minutes from the park and ride. Staff really friendly and overall would recommend this hotel.

Not overwhelmed

The rooms are basic and dont live up at all to the star billing. Check out was a joke. Friday morning, a queue 9 people deep, no auto check out and even though I had prepaid I still had to Q to evidence this. Took nearly 15 minutes. A second assistant joined the sole receptionist, with a lot of huffing and puffing. On the other hand there was one service ’event’; I had mentioned I was looking to get to a place and later that evening a marked route was slipped under my door. Thoughtful. Gym is a good touch but should open at 6am.

Barcelo pros & cons

Get the bus routes; one comes very close to the hotel. If you take taxi’s get the phone # to call to go back to the hotel. I Saturday night there were very noisy guests in the hall at around 3am. Someone stole my newspaper but the hotel provided another. The bed (for me, with arthritic pain) was too firm. Bed for 2 was a large, but about the size of a queen. I personally like a bureau for some of my clothing, but there was a large cabinet to hang them instead. There was plenty of furniture. They refill the bottles of shampoo/body gell so don’t pack them.. Towels were sufficient but check stock before getting in the shower. Take the time to figure out the shower. They have plenty of hot water, and have a shower wand which I like.. the stream was strong and felt good. The bath room is nice, the room was nice, no weird odors, wake up call that actually happened on time, and they delivered my messages promptly. I ate fish at the restaurant, and it was lovely but pricey. One thing I wasn’t prepared for is they use comforters with no top sheet. This might be just an English thing. I was a little uncomfortable about it. I left my jewellery and housekeeping put it in the safe for me. Thank you to them!

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Don’t rent a car; there’s lots of transportation. If you do, learn to drive a stick well before you go, and price them. I paid a lot! Get a GPS. Wherever you are tuck the number of a local taxi in your purse. Buy a mobile phone there; mine didn’t work (but was supposed to). Get the bus routes/times early on. Don’t drive to Oxford. Trains can take you London to Oxford. Buses can take you around Oxford.
