Great little hotel and fantastic location
Merchants House hotel is a great little boutique hotel right in the centre of Tallinn (literally a few steps from the town square). The service was excellent and the rooms were good. Breakfast was in the hotel restaurant which is down in the celler - really quirky. We had a couple of nice cocktails in the ice bar but sadly didnt have the time to make use of the free sauna as we were too busy exploring the city. Would recommend Tallinn for a city break and would definitely recommend the Merchants House while youre there.
On the same street as the Merchants House hotel (Dunkri) is a folksy Estonian restaurant which does traditional food at a reasonable price - youll recognise it as it has wooden pigs as window boxes. Not suprisingly, theres lots of pork on the menu (theres even bits of bacon in the bread!) and I would recommend trying the starter of fried bread with cheese dip and beer to wash it down. Its probably very bad for you but delicious!

A real find - nothings too much trouble to make your stay the best
A really lovely place to stay just off the main Town Square, which is like a movie set! Feel free to ask them for tea&coffee making facilities, which is included, nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the young, but very professional staff. We didnt get in until 11.30 p.m. both nights we stayed, but requested to use the sauna, which they were happy to set up for us - plenty of towels and spare bath robes if needed. The hotel is spread over 3 floors, so do bear in mind that if youre on the top theres quite a few stairs to climb. Breakfast was plentiful, cereal, yoghurt, eggs, sausage, bacon fruit, bread, pastries etc, really lovely & served right downstairs in the cellar, very cosy and nicely decorated etc. Nowhere in the hotel looks a bit grotty or dated. Merchants House is surrounded by a wide variety of places to eat & drink - do try Olde Hansa just to read the menu if nothing else - though they do serve lovely mediaeval-style food by authentically dressed multilingual staff! Bear in mind that the old part of town is the tourist area and if you eat anywhere around the town square it will be more expensive than places a little way out.
Traveller's tip on local attractions
Wear comfy shoes, take your camera and just walk, there are many photo opportunities and the place is like something out of a film, Hansel & Gretel maybe?

Perfect Hotel for Estonia Travel
We stayed at the Merchants House Hotel July 2009 for our trip in Estonia. This hotel/area was one the highlights of our Scandinavian vacation. Positives: The location is so close to the central square in the old town that it takes 30 seconds to get there. The hotel room was very large for European standards, the bed was also large and comfortable, and there was a nice flat screen TV with tons of channels. There was also free wired Internet in the room, and the staff couldnt have been nicer. The room had a great air conditioning system, and the staff was friendly. Negatives: None really, the breakfast was only OK. If you are staying in Tallinn, I recommend this hotel.
