Convenient Location
This hotel is very well situated in a good neighbourhood and within easy walking distance of the medina. Initial impression was that compared with other similar class hotels, the public areas were fairly small, a little dark and slightly opressive, which is of course to an extent the Moroccan style. Our first night was spent in a room with limited natural light, overlooking a noisy building site. When we complained we were moved to a much better room, on the other side (Sofitel side), with a large and very attractive veranda area which made a huge difference. With a few exceptions the staff were fairly off hand and their manner and service left a lot to be desired. We ate each evening at the nearby Es Saadi Hotel where the service was first class. The outside pool looked attractive but spent most of the day in the shade. There is very limited outside space at this hotel and it is quite hemmed in by other buildings. I was suprised that it has a 5* rating. Although I found certain aspects disappointing I would not rule out staying in this hotel again.
Our favourite trips were into the Atlas Mountains; Imlil on one day and on another to Setti-Fatma in the beautiful, peaceful, LOurika Valley.

Hotel & Spa recommended
Reviews read on Expedia were just about right. Yes the Hotel definately has a French bias but anywhere in Marrakech has the French bias to it. Reception staff were attentive although one particular guy on reception spoke better English. The Spa facilities are excellent and we managed to obtain thirty percent discount on treatments we booked on our last day. Outdoor pool was cold (or at least that is the impression we got from those who took a dip) but the area is more designed for relaxation rather than a place for a long swim. Hotel restaurant was good. We booked a trip to the Atlas Mountains through the Hotel and wished we had not done so. We went for a private driver who took us to various establishments (carpet makers, museums, etc.), which were designed to extract money from you in purchase of their goods. They get quite upset if they do not manage to get some cash from you. On the Atlas Mountain trip you will experience the intense poverty and sheltered lives that they live in, which we found quite upsetting. Recommend the tour bus experience, which we bought through Expedia when we booked at about eight pound per head. This gives you a good feel for the city and provides you with your bearings for your stay. You can also hop off and on if you wish to vists some of the gardens.
Traveller's tip on dining
If you like wine or beer with your meal check the restaurant serves it before taking your seat as there are a lot of places that do not serve alcohol. Do not take cash with you to exchange, just go to a hole in the wall and draw out what you need as you go along.

Gorgeous, great spa
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Hivernage and Spa. Close enough to the medina, great staff in the pool/bar/spa. Highly recommended---although dont ask for change (or anything else) at the front desk.
