Proceed with extreme caution
The location is lovely. The horror is that every single apartment varies - a lot! I was put into an utterly disgusting apartment, stained carpets, smelly, dirty, everything was sticky, curtains dangling from poles, sockets out of walls, wires exposed, rusty furniture, including the bathtub and patio set, cupboard doors hanging off hinges and blackened walls. The TV was tiny and had no remote. The front door was difficult to lock and had holes carved right the way through on the inside. Dirty cleaning items were everywhere, several lights didnt work and to top it all - no hot water. The boiler was blackened. Despite my protests, the reception staff could only offer a 15euro dinner voucher and the manager refused to deal with it. Only by making a huge stink did I get moved. Too late into a short break. So proceed with extreme caution if you choose this facility, it is not a hotel, they dont care.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
The supermarket in the Lago Azul apartment complex is fantastic and cheap. In fact, Lago Azul is a much better option all round.

Probably better alternatives out there...
Firstly Villamoura is a wonderful place. We picked this hotel due to the large pool and relative proximity to the beaches and marina but there were problems. The beds had wooden ends to them so if youre over 6ft you wont be able to stretch out fully. Satellite TV it may be but the only English speaking channel was BBC news. We were on the ground floor and could hear every footstep and chair movement above. For some reason the bin men would often collect outside the hotel at 4am waking us up. The receptionists on the only 2 occasions I needed them finished their phone calls with their friends before dealing with me. On a positive note the pool is nice and the 20 minute walk to the marina and beaches are quite pleasant.
Traveller's tip on dining
Akvavit & Fairways at the Marina must be sampled. Pricey but wonderful food and service.

Its fine!
It is great value for the cash, but as youd imagine not exactly a luxury resort. Its the cheapest place we found in this part of the Algarve with a large pool (which didnt get too busy whilst we were there) and self catering facilities. Despite other reviews i actually liked the location as it was in a private spot but eay to get into town as there are loads of taxis at about 5 euros a journey. Also if you explore a bit theres a whole complex of 3 restaurants and bars down the road. We ate in the most authentic looking place and it was lovely! Great for a cheap relaxing getaway in beautiful surroundings. Not great if youre after luxury and the beach at your doorstep.
Dont get half board in the resort as we ate in the restaurant once and it was pretty average, like a bad English pub. With such great cooking facilities and some more authentic restaurants nearby, why eat there?!
