Great hotel, very different!!
My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Silken Puerta American. On arrival we were told which floors had rooms available and then given a directory showing us photos of the rooms to choose from. We stayed on the 9th floor, where the rooms were quite "pod" like, very modern with a great shower in the bathroom. Beds were comfortable and room well appointed. SkyNight bar on 13th floor was great, but drinks expensive (20Euro for G & T and beer). The pool was also on the 13th floor, it was small and had a small steam room. There was no supplement to use this. Overall the hotel was excellent, location was not central, but Cartegena metro was less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel, where it was 1Euro to ride anywhere! (There was a 1Euro supplement to go to the airport, but this was a bargain compared to the 25Euros we paid for a taxi on arrival!). We would definitely recommend this hotel for a short break or for business travellers, Not sure how child friendly it would be.
Take the metro from the airport rather than a taxi. Much cheaper and could be quicker depending on traffic. Metro only costs 2Euros for trip and probably takes just over 40 mins. You need to get off at Cartegena where the hotel is less than 5 mins walk away.

Very bizarre hotel - all about design, not function
Hotel looks very trendy and is modern and minimalistic. We stayed on the second floor. There were no drawers to store clothes in, the wardrobe light stayed on all night and there were no bedside lights for reading. By far the worst thing was the lack of a proper bathroom - separate toilet with a glass door (very little privacy!!) and a pair of sinks in the bedroom. The shower was literally in the middle of the room and had no door - you just walk in and walk out in full view of the hotel room. Fine if youre with a partner but what about work colleagues or a father and daughter? I was with a friend and felt hugely embarassed having to strip off and shower in front of her. Only two places you couldnt see into the shower was by sitting in the toilet or the wardrobe! Hotel a bit out of the way but right next to a Metro stop. We paid 7E for one orange juice in the downstairs bar - couldnt go to the Skybar due to a private party. Madrid fabulous - but worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The design of the room made me feel very self-conscious and uncomfortable.

Hotel Puerta America ( Madrid ) October 2009 - Madrids best hotel
I couldnt speak highly enough of the hotel. All 12 room floors have been designed by famous artists or architects which gives the hotel great individuality. The hotel has two restaurants, two bars ( one with an amazing view of the city ), a gym and a heated pool. The glass lifts also always offer a great view of the city. The location is not central however it is pretty close to the airport (20 minute drive) so that is a positive. we actually preferred this as sometimes its better to be in a pretty tranquil area. Its only a 15 minute drive from the centre of Madrid ( Gran via, Callao, Sol). We mainly used the metro during, the hotel is a 2 minute walk from the station Cartegena and is a 30 minute journey in total to central stations.. The metro network is very clean, extremely reliable, well staffed and and runs from 6am to 1:30am and this is very useful. It has a brilliant rain forest - head shower as well as a hand held shower which is a fantastic feature. It come with a large 32inch TV, ample cupboard space and a nice desk and seating area. The bed was queen size and very comfortable as well.
There were a lot of "musts" but the one restaurant you have to go to is Botin ( the oldest restaurant in the world as accredited by the guiness book of records ). It has a great atmosphere and fanastic food, I highly recommend the baby lamb as a main. Another great restaurant was Matrtium ( La Latina ) has fantastic tapas and great wine. It has a great traditional yet modern feel to the place. I highly recommend the bull tail ( I was aprehensive, but believe me, it is delicious ) which was a pleasant surprise.
