Savoy Gardens Closed - upgraded to Classic Savoy
The driver of the taxi for the airport to hotel transfer told us on route that he thought that the Savoy Gardens Hotel was closed while work was being carried out. Full marks to him, he was right. SHouldnt we have had word of this before we left the UK? Anyhow, it seemed a minor problem since we were being transferred to the Classic Savoy, same owners and 5*. It is fair to say that the public areas are what you might expect - and it was better positioned being nearer to the sea and Funchal centre. However, that is where the positives end. The fact that the refrigerant gas leaked out our mini-bar during the small hours obviiously doesnt help, but, this aside, our opinion is that Savoy Classic has seen better days and is, perhaps, best described by the phrase faded grandeur. Apparently it is to be redeveloped shortly which may explain a lot. On the basisi of our experience it is, at best, 3*. So bear this in mind if you find yourselves being upgraded form the Savoy Gradens Hotel.
Madeira is expensive by comparison with (say) the Canaries or mainland Portugal/Spain. If you are looking for beaches this isnt the place for you. Special offers on excursions means attending a Time-share presentation - is the saving worth losing half a day of your hard earned holiday?

Great value-for-money for the area
Compared to the 5* hotels nearby, the Savoy Gardens looks relatively plain and not ostentatious. But, the inside is lovely, the rooms tastefully decorated, the bedding excellent, and the location very convenient. Two somewhat negative points: (1) the frontdesk woman was the most unfriendly person wed ever come across. Not a good first impression. Probably bad luck. (2) The Expedia claims that mopeds and bikes are hirable on site. Not true. The hotel staff looked at us in astonishment when we asked them if they had bikes to rent. But all and all, a great place to stay; clean, quite, and with gorgeous elevated views of the ocean.
