Hotel needs refurbishing
While the staff at the hotel were most helpful, the Royal Hotel feels like it has not been refurbished since the 1970’s. While eventually we ended up with a nice enough room on the second night of our stay, many rooms are small and smell almost dank. Some rooms however are nice, and if you are looking for a hotel with a 1970’s feel, this is it!!

a big disappointment
May have been good once, but not recently. The bulb missing from the bedside lamp, a lift that does not inspire confidence, a bar that has everything except a bartender and a restaurant that is best (but not easily) forgotten, all conspire to make the Royal a great advertisement for Thurso’s other hotels.

Royal Hotel Thurso
This is a fairly old hotel in downtown Thurso right on a main street. Parking is in the back. The rooms were fine but if your room is on the main street it can get noisy. Breakfast was fine and the front desk staff were very nice.
Traveller's tip on local attractions
Take the ferry to Orkney. Drive the Highlands to get to Thurso. It is a stunning drive.
