Not up to the billing
This hotel does not quite match up to its grand title or reputation. It is perfectly pleasant (apart from the bathroom having an unfortunate smell) but it just isnt "grand" in any sense and barely hits its 5 stars. The rooms are average sized and very mid-range and the general look of the place is functional rather than elegant. The true Grand Palace is in the late stages of renovation next door - from its outside appearance which dominates the Portoroz waterfront, that will truly match its name and former glory when it is finished.
Traveller's tip on recreational activities
The indoor pool and spa complex is excellent though the absence of a proper outdoor pool is a drawback. You can use the pool at the neighbouring hotel but it is very crowded as a result.

A great holiday find
Portoroz is a great location for a holiday and grand hotel portoroz good location for that holiday. In eurpoean terms the hotel is a good four star hotel rather than a five star, but that should not put me off recommending this hotel. The hotel staff were efficient and friendly and the hotel was new, clean and welcoming. Although there is no natural beach at Portoroz the Hotel "beach" with its very well laid out areas of sunloungers and sun canopies one of the best Ive been to. Only down side is the Sauns Park was closed for the month of July for planned maintenance
Traveller's tip on local attractions
Make sure you vist the various small ports to the notth of Portoroz including Piran well worth a visit.

Nice four-star relaxation experience
The hotel is a nice four-star hotel with good spa and beach area facilities. The spa actually makes the hotel worth visiting. The spa offers very large variety of good quality services and also a nice pool and sauna area. We took masages, manicure, pedicure etc, and all the treatments were done professionally. The staff at the spa doesnt always speak English so if you have something special you want them to do ask the spa reception to tell what you want. Hotel has an own beach area with a nice lunch restaurant / bar, and the food is good although the service can be slow. We also enjoyed thai massages in the beach area and recommend that highly. The reception service at the hotel is very basic and they are not very used to unusual situations, so be patient with them or othewise things wont work out. Hotel arranges tranportation from the Ljubljana airport but you have to book it two days in advance - we learned that one day prior to our arrival and it was too late.
