Room not the same as reserved
Woman at the front desk checking us in was incredibly cold. The room we received was not what we reserved. The rooms require a hotel key to turn on the lights and air conditioning. This is fine if anyone would have explained how this works. Walking around a dark room patting the walls isn’t the solution. They refused to move us to the reserved room even though the hotel was nearly empty. Definitely would not go back.

Good hotel and location but restaurant disappointing
No complaints at all about the hotel. Comfortable room and a really convenient location for all that Bilbao has to offer. However, my friend and I decided one night to eat at the hotel restaurant, Abando and this was a real disappointment, especially the service. After ordering wine and a main course we were served our meal and after that we completely ignored by the waiter despite the fact that the restaurant was almost empty and the other diners were being attended to, Our plates were not even cleared and we were not asked if we required dessert. When we eventually got the waiter’s attention to pay the bill I enquired about the discount advertised in the book we received when we purchased our "Bilbao Cards" . I was told somewhat abruptlythat it was a travel card! Eventually the hotel manager was called and went off to investigate and returned to inform me we were indeed entitled to a discount, A small amount, considerably less than the 10% discount advertised in the book, was deducted, but this still did not make the indifferent fare we were served value for money.
Tapas in any of the bars and cafes is definitely the way to go. The quality was excellent in all the places we tried not only at lunchtime but also in the evening.

Traveller's tip on local attractions
the guggenhiem is perhaps a twenty minute walk away and old town a little more than that. i enjoy walking, so this was no big concern for me.
