Central to rail station
My son and I had one night at the Alpha-Palmiers Hotel. We chose it because it was close to the main rail station. There is s very steep incline to reach the hotel. Once there it is very modern, clean and staff are helpful. They gave us free tickets to use the Metro which allowed us to get to see the beautiful Lac Lehman. The tariff is high compared to similar hotels but not for Switzerland generally.

business hotel under renovation
This hotel seems to be mainly a business hotel on weekdays and fill the room on weekends with mostly European tour groups. Pros: the hotel rooms are as modern and clean as advertised; near Lausanne train station (steep uphill 1 block from it); near water front (4 blocks steep uphill). Bathroom is spacious and more importantly--clean. The shower had great water pressure and drains well (personal pet peeve). The tap water tastes as good as any bottled water I’ve tasted--the source of Evian water apparently is across the lake from Lausanne. negatives: as of 5/22/09 under major renovation on some floors of the hotel. We had to walk on plastic tarps at parts. However, because it was over the weekend, no one was working. Parking is next to hotel--I believe cheaper parking can be found by the train station. The hotel service staff is stoic and detached, which seemed strange until I realized that is reflective of Swiss culture.

For first time travelers to Switzerland, be prepared for sticker shock on eating out. But have fun!
