Cheap and cheerful - superb location

This is the second time I stayed at this hostal because it’s so cheap and the location is excellent - my balcony looked out onto Purta Del Sol - literally the centre of Madrid. The rooms are basic but very clean, the shared bathroom is a bit of a hassle but was hardly ever occupied and again was very clean. I would recommend taking your own bathtowel though as I did because the ones they give you are clean but not not very thick! The service is very friendly and helpful - for example I needed a plug/socket adaptor to charge my camera and was lent one by the receptionist. The internet access is a bit rubbish (one keyboard had all the letters rubbed off!) but it is completely free I suppose. Breakfast is fine but not luxury - toast/coffee/juice/jams/cheese/ham - same every morning 9-11am but you could eat as much as you wanted. The best thing about this hotel is the location, I would go back a third time if I wanted a bargain.

The photography gallery at Canal de Isobel II - it’s an amzing gallery in a converted water tower. Take your passport to get in though becasue it’s within a government/military base.

Great place to stay on a budget

I stayed at Gay Hostel in Puerta Del Sol, It has a great location as you are only about a 10min walk from everything. The satff were very friendly and as i was travelling alone they had lots of advice and told me about little places I should visit that may not be on any tourist map. The room was very clean and comfy,In my room there was a balconey with a sunlounger overlooking the square. As the hostel is in such a busy square I always felt safe returning home at all hours and in different states!!

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

When you stay at this hostel get up and have the breakfast, its basic, but pretty good, it will encourage you to get out and see some sites.

Decent value

My single room was the cheapest I could find in Madrid, and it was a good value. It was a little hard to figure out where in the Plaza del Sol the hostel was, but I found it eventually (near the bear-hugging-tree sculpture). The cleaning woman came to my room every day, but it still felt a little grungy. Bathrooms are shared, but my room had a sink, TV, and an armoire. My room faced the air shaft, so it was quiet. The owner was nice and spoke English. The location is perfect and the elevator is convenient. Breakfast was typical for Spain: sliced bread, sliced ham, & sliced cheese with coffee, tea, & juice.

Traveller's tip on saving a few bucks

Food is cheap in the basement grocery store of the Corte Ingles, which is also in the Plaza del Sol.
