Extreme noise pollution
Bog standard 70s tourist hotel let down by its location - yes, it has a sea view (just) but its at the end of town where Cretes hip young things go out to chastely kiss (hem hem), make a frappucino last four hours and rev their underpowered cars and mopeds till all hours. If this were the UK, Germany or Holland there would also be fights, window smashing and sirens, so its not all bad. ITS JUST VERY NOISY. Apparently they have gigs in the rickety wooden amphitheatre thing over the road in summer, so that must improve things no end. At the moment it just plays host to very barky dogs and sportive cats. The hotel itself is just about okay, though a lack of safes in the rooms is a pain.
Traveller's tip on dining
Avoid the two self-agrandising tavernas on the harbour, called Apostolis I&II, and go for the one in between called Cafe Vasilis, its miles friendlier and more authentic

Closest thing to an American hotel I could find.
Other than the bed being uncomfortable, this hotel was great. After changing my reservation from another hotel that was absolutely terrifying, the Kriti Hotel was an oasis! Its equivalent to an American Holiday Inn...the hotel staff is all very friendly and willing to help in any way possible. Overall excellent experience!

Kriti Hotel, Chania
Hard to beat for location and price, I think next time Ill opt for a room with a mountain view. My sea view room was quite noisy, (although I obstinately insist on sleeping with the balcony doors open), and I think the mountain view rooms may have slightly larger balconies (cant promise this is right). Also, the sea rooms are on the north side of the hotel, whilst the mountain views are on the south, so the light is better ~ but this was an October stay, so cooler North might be welcome in the heat of summer. Location is very good ~ harbour, market, old town, museums and bus station all within 10 minutes comfortable walk. Breakfast buffet is plentiful in quantity and choice (although better coffee would be appreciated by me). The staff in all departments were very friendly and attentive, and Id like to stress that I didnt experience any sharp practices at billing time ~ my extras (bar, room service, internet access) were accurate and reasonable and exactly what I expected to the cent. The rooms are perhaps a little on the small side if youre planning to hold parties in the room, but perfectly adequate for sleeping etc.!
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Use the public transport to see Western Crete ~ there is a good network of buses from Chania bus station out through the villages which will give you a broader flavour of the island. The buses are modern and comfortable, and the fares are very reasonable.
