Great hotel, stunning views!

I was really pleased with the hotel. Reading other reviews we were expecting it to be difficult to find but got more lost trying to get out of Catania airport. Just follow the signs for Francavilla on the SS185 and there are plenty of signs. We ended up staying at Il Borgo which was lovely, in a peaceful setting with stunning views. We only had dinner at the hotel the first night we got there and it was really nice although we couldn’t finish the second course due to the amount of food. If you’re looking for a cheap option for dinner one night I can strongly recommend Pronto Pizza (takeaway) in Gaggi - best pizza ever! If you are looking for a relaxing/romantic get-away and don’t want to pay through the teeth then this place is perfect!

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Ensure you rent a car and expect manic driving from the Sicilians Bring a phrase book! Do not expect that people will speak English, even at the hotel.

good rustic hotel

Hotel was just as expected from the other rooms, nice quiet location, friendly staff (despite something of a language barrier - always very keen to help), clean rooms. We had an excellent stay. Would have scored 5 but for some slight niggles over the state of repair of some bathroom fitments.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Definitely worth a hire car if staying here - there is not much in the vicinity to walk to, and as this is a small hotel, there isn’t much in the way of organised activities. It is a good base for travelling around though - heed the warnings about finding it - signage appears to have improved since some reviews were written, but it still isn’t too obvious.

A few niggles, but generally beautiful

Our first night was disastrous due to broken air conditioning and me being 6 months pregnant and therefore very hot... 24 reception service did not exist. However, in the morning the lovely lady on the desk was very helpful (despite our lack of Italian and her lack of english) and changed our room. We were in Casa Delle Monarche and it was very nice, a little run down (the tennis court had lots of growth) but the pool area was well looked after, and the breakfast was perfectly respectable. The location is wonderful, such a beautiful gorge and the river was lovely for swimming in.
