Mixed feelings
Stayed in hotel with a 3 yr old. Place is too far from everything - a drive even to the local shop. Geared up for walkers mainly. Staff helpful and friendly. Room was ok but mix up meant got a dble room with a put me up bed for my daughter. Not ideal for privacy. Expected suite. Swimming pools excellent but not much else to occupy small child. Food was very average and quite expensive. Again, not much choice of local eateries.
Stay closer to capital, Funchal - Ribeira Brava has a fabu1ous play park!

March 2008 visit
This hotel is great for relaxing; The facilities are excellent, the restaurant very good. Our room was clean, had a lovely veranda looking out to sea. All the rooms face the sea. In fact the hotel is by the sea, separated by a small road and you can hear the sea all the time. Even in March the weather was warm and we returned home with suntans. The down side is there is nothing in the village to do, you MUST have a hire car. There is an excellent restaurant high up above the hotel, you can see it if you look up. Driving is interesting, as all roads are very steep and winding!
Traveller's tip on dining
Do try the beef on skewers, a Madeiran speciality and delicious.

Our sort of place
Definately our sort of hotel.Very quiet(we went in January)great balcony looking onto Atlantic(even saw dolphins/seabirds in a feeding frenzy) staff lovely, especially girls in restaurant& we soon found dishes we liked(fish&bananas!)Maybe not the liveliest Hotel even in summer.Theres a few bars, great views& walks, some pretty houses & interesting bits of history. If you like that sort of thing then its wonderful-& we certainly did.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
If you want to see the best of the island do need a car. Some very steep& hairy roads! We found 1000cc engine struggled hard getting up to the high peaks(2nd gear)but so lovely once youre up there.
