5* hotel but only 3* quality
Although the reception service was good, the maintenance side left a lot to be desired. The air conditioning was non existant and the shower rose had a life of its own. No action was taken after complaining. The view from my roon resembled something out of Colditz. Definately overpriced

Great little hotel in a perfect location
If you dont like tower block hotels then choose Lopez de Haro. Its a small (about 50 rooms) hotel, very helpful and friendly staff, in a quiet street away from the urban noise and only 2 minutes from the river which is a charming way to walk to the old town or to the Guggenheim. Its close to the tram and only about 10mins walk to the nearest metro stations and main shopping areas. Got a great deal on the room which made it more affordable than a 4* in other major cities. Its not luxurious (which is what I assumed a 5* would be) but I had a very enjoyable stay indeed - we were upgraded to a larger room with large twin beds upon arrival. Only minor problem I had was the safe wasnt working, but the staff offered an alternative safe in the lobby with our own key. I would definitely stay there again over any other hotel in Bilbao (buiding works at the Domine Grand and all others in the shopping district are modern and noisy looking).
Bilbao is a bit strange in terms of evening meals. Most restaurants seem to open at 8.30pm at the earliest which is ok sometimes but means you dont finish til 11pm ish. I didnt like the lack of alternative. The best way round this seemed to be to have a set lunch menu in the early afternoon - quite cheap (around 12-15 euros), good food and a bottle of wine for 2 people. Then you only need the pintxos (bar tapas) in the evening.

Great Location
Excellent central location, 5 mins walk from the Guggenheim and with lots of restaurants nearby. Everything in the city is within walking distance. The room was spotless and very comfortable, not 5 star though. Be careful not to confuse this hotel with its sister Hotel Ercilla a 10 min drive across the city away. This one doesnt really use the name Ercilla but goes under the Lopez de Haro name... we almost checked into the wrong hotel by mistake. Good value.
Theres a very nice cafe across the road which does cheap and cheerful breakfast deals, including freshly squeezes orange juice. No need to pay the hotels €17 breakfast charge!
