Great for use as a base

We stayed four nights at the Antica Locanda, Pienza in September 2008. The position of the building was perfect as it was not right next to the market stalls on the Monday market but you really felt you were in the middle of everything. The bedroom was lovely with old furniture that was beautiful, the bathroom clean and modern, no bath but reasonable shower. The kitchen consisted of a cooker, a sink and a toaster together with a few cupboards! No kettle (someone had dropped it apparently) and no knives sharp enough to cut anything except butter. Breakfast consisted of a roll per person and jam, teabags, coffee and sugar, no butter or milk. When I told the owner I was going to buy butter and milk for breakfast on our first morning she did call me back to her and I was pleased to think she was going to provide some but no, she showed me on a map where I could shop!!! So not much breakfast provided but then you would think staying in an apartment you would be able to make your own. Think again, use of the kitchen costs extra - 27.50 euros per person per day is the added cost written on the door but they did relent to 20 euros per day total!!! How kind! I resented it so much we ate out instead. It’s ideal if you are looking for a nice room to sleep in but not if you want to be able to cook (or indeed boil water) with ease!

For a good meal nearby try il Chiostro di Pienza hotel restaurant. We had a wonderful evening here with delicious food, good wine and perfect service. Three courses cost about 50 euros each not including wine(20 to 150 euros). For a treat enter the restaurant directly through the garden - from the main square turn into the alleyway by the trough. Turn right along the town wall and then right again at the stop sign. The little garden gate is a short way along, on the left - perfect!

Wake up on a Midle Age Street

Lovely hotel, simple walk up hotel in the middle of a middle age town. No cars on these ancient streets. Just cool winds from the hills all night. Modern bath, TV, air conditioning but the view is a thousand years old. A perfect combination of antique and modern.
