Outside the Center

This is a former palace converted to a motel set 3 blocks east of the Piazza della Liberte. It will be inconvenient to most visitors desiring to be near the centro storico but good if you have a car to park. The #12 bus leaves from the door and goes downtown and loops Florence as a tour bus. Many other bus options are on nearby streets. Buy a single ticket at the reception or multiple ride tickets at the kiosk outside SMN train station. Otherwise, it’s about a 30 minute walk to the center of Florence. You might cut a couple of minutes trying to walk a straight line to your desired destination. Hotel has a limited choice buffet breakfast where you must order anything other than drip coffee. There is wi-fi available as well as the daily local journals. In -room mini-bar, safe, TV with CNN, dedicated US and Canada phone, and pulsating shower. Corridors are maze-like with motion detected lights. Some nearby restaurants (try Perseus) and Piazza behind hotel under railway.

Try not to opt for guided tours. Rather, invest in a good guide book covering what you want to see and follow the instructions and descriptions. I was disappointed with the English tour of the Palazzo Vecchio. Once the guided tour ended I was forbidden to go back and take a second look. Security was called to usher me out. But the visitors who opted to tour on their own could stay in the Palace all day and roam at will. So after that negative encounter, on my own I visited the Pitti Palace, Boboli Gardens, Uffizi, Medici Palace, Brancacci Chapel, climbed the Dome, Tower, went into the Baptistry as well as the Cathedral Museum, walked the Oltrarno, and shopped in both the New and Old Markets. Timed Uffizi tickets can be bought in advance for an extra $ 4 euro. Check the signs by the queue.

Great little Hotel

Diana Park Hotel was one of our best experiences with the six hotels we stayed in while in Italy. The room was especially nice. The staff was wonderful. They communicated well in English. They had great suggestions for dinner close by. Breakfast was excellent. Bus just outside door. We highly recommend.

Traveller's tip on dining

Try Alfredo’s about two blocks away. The hotel will call and make your reservation. Great food. We chose to drive to city center because of my bad back. Don’t drive in the old town but park across the river. The GPS failed us in this city because it couldn’t navigate the narrow one way streets. The map did us the most good. For the rest of Italy the GPS is a must!

Clean Hotel a little distance from the Tourist Center

I was surprised at how clean of the hotel was! It had some nice features like central air, a safe box, delicious breakfast and high-tech shower. The staff was very helpful and told us of the bus schedules and gave us suggestions for things to do in Florence. The only downfall was that the location was about a 15-minute walk from the center of Florence. But- what is Europe for if not walking? I thought the hotel was well worth the price and was very pleased at my stay.
