A great Sicilian retreat

We spent a week at the excellent, out-in-the-country hotel of Masseria degli Ulivi, and loved it. Situated about 90 minutes drive from Catania Airport, and 15 minutes from the historic town of Noto, it’s a great place to retreat to. Decor is simple but the place is comfortable and charming. You’ll have to get your own lunch, but the on-site restaurant is fantastic, if a little expensive for our taste. If you want a quiet place to use as a base for exploring this fantastic island, we’d highly recommend it. It’s not the height of luxury, but for us it was just right!

Traveller's tip

It’s pretty rural and traditionally Italian and everything shuts down from 12 noon until about 4pm. Make sure you have a lunch plan. Visit Pantalica, Noto, and climb Mt Etna. Brilliant!

A relaxing break in lovely countryside

This hotel is set back from the main road about 15mins drive from Noto. In beautiful countryside, the buildings are traditional Sicilian design and bedrooms (or, at least, our bedroom) was spotless and elegant. With well-kept gardens, a well-sized infinity pool surrounded by sunny and shaded loungers, we had a really relaxing time. Breakfast is in the form of a buffet, with lovely touches like fresh apricots, delicious fresh bread and pastries. The on-side restaurant is open in the evenings, and serves a good range of traditional Sicilian food. We were a little worried about the expense, being a ’captive market’, and while the food was more expensive than in nearby towns (approximately 10 euros for a starter, and 15 euros for a main course), the quality was excellent and the extra cost was worthwhile not having to drive and being able to have a couple of glasses of the (very reasonably priced)local wines. Staff were friendly and very welcoming, especially as I tried to bumble my way through conversations with my dodgy Italian! There is also a tennis court, for which you can borrow rackets and balls from reception (for a small fee). You’ll probably need a car to get here, though, as I didn’t see any public transport around the very rural area in which the hotel’s set. Roads are very quiet, and driving is a doddle around here. Parking in Noto is also easy, though you’ll need to remember to buy your parking tickets from the local Tabaccheria rather than from a parking machine.

Relaxing, super experience.

Staying at Masseria degli Ulivi was a very relaxing experience. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant was good. The room was clean and beautifully simple - its unfussiness lending a relaxing quality. It’s a very good base from which to explore the surrounding area, which was rich in places to visit: pretty towns, beaches, fishing villages, ancient sites... We stayed eight nights and still hadn’t done everything. Highly recommended.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay

A rented car is a necessity for staying in this hotel and exploring the area. Watch out for one-way signs in towns (they’re not always easy to spot!) - but if you do go wrong, drivers are very polite. If you have a choice of car, rent as small / narrow a car as possible.
