needs work
The hotel has clearly not been maintained. The pools were in poor shape, the sofas had tears in the fabric, the mattresses and box springs were collapsed. The kitchenettes were poorly stocked for cooking and timer on the oven didnt work. One can see how the resort must have been nice twenty years ago...the staff was put out to be helpful. The nicest staff member was the masseuse, and she was a substitute.

A return trip
We returned to sands Beach this year having been before in 2007. It remains a great resort as long as you book beachfront accomodation. Hacienda restuarant food not great but lots of restaurants etc very close by. Beautiful coast line, clean villas, well kept surroundings - lovely easy stay for us including three late teens.
Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay
The beachfront is best, others OK but there area few villas that face plain white walls - to be avoided as could be quite dreary.

Exceeded Expectations!
We went as a couple and didn’t really know what to expect, but were really pleased with the hotel! The main reception is huge and has a small supermarket in it, as well as PC’s you can purchase internet time on. You don’t have to get a beach/lagoon fronted unit as nearly every apartment faces onto a pool and gets plenty of sunshine. It’s very family oriented, with daily activities if desired – unless you just want to stay beside the pool of course. The staff were great and very helpful too. Our only criticism was that the linen was a bit old/tatty, but it was very clean and tidy otherwise. Walking to the local shopping centre takes about 5 minutes and while there’s not a lot to buy, there are a few nice local restaurants. Keep walking along the beach promenade from there and you’ll come across “English” pubs etc on the waterfront if that’s your thing. It’s not a place for young singles, nor if you’re mad in to nightlife, but if (like us) you’re just after a nice relaxing break in the sun it’s the perfect place. We’d definitely go back!
Would recommend hiring a car for a couple of days to view the island’s sights rather than the bus tours: ie the hotel charges €12 pp rtn to add you to a bus that first stops @ loads of hotels before bringing you to the Tiguese market on Sunday (it’s nothing amazing by the way) and our car cost only €25 a day. Would say there’s no need to book a car in advance as there are plenty of places once you’re there.
