Don’t understand why this hotel is so highly reviewed

I stayed here because of the price and the excellent reviews on Expedia. There is no doubt it is a well maintained, clean, high quality hotel with the services you’d expect. BUT It is incredibly noisy (despite asking for a quiet room), both traffic noise and inside th hotel and it’s bars. Take ear-plugs. I have a personal hatred of excessive hotel markups, this hotel takes the prize. The lower room rates is because everything in the hotel is double normal expensive hotel prices - breakfast ~45USD, a small bottle of coke ~5USD, Wifi ~25USD etc. It also manages to be very stuffy and formal, without actually being good enough to pull it off. Stay at Selenza just down the road instead!

The Wellington Hotel

This hotel isn’t too far from the metro station Retiro (5 mins approx walking). The surrounding area is part of the very upscale area of Madrid hence we didn’t feel scared walking back at night. Staff at the hotel are very friendly and helped us to organise a couple of tours one of which I chose to cancel and the staff had absolutely no poblem with this. Overall this is a lovely area to stay in and is home to w ide range of cafes and restuarants.

Buy a 10 trip metro tickets - you will save loads. Don’t eat breakfast at the hotel. Go to one of the by cafe’s and again you will save loads.
