Begin your guided tour strolling through 250-acre (101-hectare) Cubbon Park, located in the heart of the city and filled with carefully landscaped green lawns and flowering plants and trees. The grand architecture of a few government buildings peppered throughout lends a majestic air to the park. In particular, the massive, neo-Dravidian Vidhan Soudha, which houses the state legislative assembly, reflects the pride of Indian independence in its architecture.

Famous for its red roses that bloom all year, Lal Bagh is a 240-acre (97-hectare) garden oasis. Wander through the lawns and flowerbeds of this aesthetic garden and find lotus pools, fountains, terraces, and an assortment of tropical and sub-tropical herbs. The gardenís collection includes over 1,000 species of botanical specimens, including rare plants imported from Persia, Afghanistan, and France.

The palace and fort of Tipu Sultan stand as a testament of times gone by. Even in their current state of slow dilapidation, they evoke the grandeur of a bygone era. The palace is a once-lavish, teakwood structure with pillars, arches, and balconies, all flanked by gardens leading up to its entrance, while the centuries-old fort memorializes Sultanís resistance to British domination.

Last stop is Bull Temple, dedicated to the Hindu lord Shivaís vahana (vehicle). Though the temple itself is worthy of note, the real draw for many visitors is the 15 x 20-foot (4/12 x 6-m) statue of a bull, affectionately known as Nandi. Chiseled out of one massive boulder, Nandi has proudly rested on her four legs since the 16th century.
