Just book your winter break here and grab your BUDAPEST WINTER HOT PACK voucher at your hotel's reception— it's your key to the steaming hot baths and to discounts, deals and discoveries in Budapest, with its culture and cuisine, bars and bridges, palaces and promenades and the delightful Danube.
Bear in mind, the Museum of Fine Arts now hosts the star exhibition of the season: Caravaggio to Canaletto and the Franz Liszt Academy of Music reopened in October 2013 while the Budapest Spring Festival is arriving in March.
In winter the city sparkles with elegance, hosts the cosiest of Christmas markets, the Advent Feast at Basilica, spills over with mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, wills you to strap on skates for a spin and warms you with hearty hospitality. It offers you an evening in the glittering Opera House, classical and jazz in the impressive Palace of the Arts, gets a groove on underground at Akvarium Club and other superb urban spaces like Szimpla Kert and steams the stress out at the Széchenyi Baths. The star exhibition, Caravaggio to Canaletto in the Museum of Fine arts is a must this season and even culture vultures will be impressed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra's and the Budapest Spring Festival's programme.

Caravaggio to Canaletto - The Glory of Italian Baroque and Rococo Painting
A few years ago staff at the Szépművészeti Múzeum set themselves the ambitious goal of presenting Italian painting from the 15th to the 18th centuries in two consecutive exhibitions. The first exhibition, Botticelli to Titian, was one of the museum's most successful exhibitions in recent times. Our next exhibition, equally impressive and dedicated to the following period in Italian painting, is Caravaggio to Canaletto – The Glory of Italian Baroque and Rococo Painting. The exhibition is of special importance for cultural life in Hungary: never before has such a comprehensive range of Italian painting from this period come before the Hungarian public and even in Italy the last such exhibition was held in 1922!
Open: Tue-Sun 26 October 2013 - 16 February 2014
THE SPA CAPITAL – HALF-PRICED OR EVEN FREE BATHS WITH THIS PACKAGE
Gellért Baths – Art Nouveau Masterpiece
The Gellért baths, attached to the famous Gellért Hotel, are the most prominent and elegant. The indoor pool is a firm favourite with photographers and a familiar image of Hungary, consistently upstaging the huge and equally impressive entrance hall. However, there is much more to the Gellért than just the Art Nouveau architecture. Slip into the exquisite, Zsolnay-tiled sanctum of the warm pools, saunas and steam rooms for Turkish-style relaxation, or enjoy the sunshine and splendour of the outside pool, complete with a wave machine for the kids – and the big kids!
No visit to Hősök tere (Heroes' Square) is complete without winding-down in the Széchenyi baths in the Városliget (City Park). The complex, one of the largest in Europe, boasts the usual network of hot tubs and steam rooms, but the outdoor pools in the enormous neo-Baroque courtyard are the main attraction and are particularly atmospheric in the winter months. The warmer pool is better suited to a chat, a soak and a game of chess, while the second offers alternate bubble massage and a bizarre aquatic roundabout that brings a smile to faces of all ages. Only committed swimmers, equipped with the obligatory swimming caps, take to the colder water in the central pool.
The Rudas, near the Buda bridgehead of Erzsébet híd, is a men-only baths (although the swimming pool is open to both sexes) built by the Turkish Pasha of Buda in the 16th century. Its soothing turquoise octagonal pool makes it all the more relaxing – and helps you come to terms with wearing nothing but a skimpy apron. Open daily 6 am-8 pm, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for men only, Tuesdays to women only and Saturday and Sunday for both sexes. Evening and night opening hours: Friday to Saturday: 10 pm – 4 am
The Lukács Bath was the favourite baths of the Turkish Grand Vizier, Pasha Mustafa. After Buda was recaptured from the Turks in 1686, the baths became the property of the Treasury. Visitors seeking remedies for their diseases came from all parts of the world. After successful recovery, many of them placed marble plaques on the walls of the spa. The newly renovated spa is a complex of thermal pools, swimming pools, activity pools, a wellness section and saunas offering a wide range of services for visitors. It is a favourite meeting place of Budapest's leading intellectuals, artists and politicians. The waters of the spa are believed to be medically the most effective of any of the spas in Budapest.
