Places to go

Fort Malborough
Cala de Sant Esteve Call for info: 971 36 04 6210:00-13:00 and 17:00-20:00 Tue-Sat, 10:00-13:00 Sun
Maó's value as a port was clear to the British, who built Fort Malborough above the charming emerald green inlet, Cala de Sant Esteve, southeast of Maó. Most of the fortress was excavated into the rock below surface level and the 45-minute visit, with videos and sound effects (incoming cannon balls!) is well worth it.
Admission: full €3.00
Castell de Bellver
Camilo José Cela Call for info: 971 73 06 57Apr-Sep: Mon-Sat 08:00-20:00; Oct-Mar: Mon-Sat 08:00-19:15; Sun and holidays year-round: 10:00-17:00
The circular Castell de Bellver is an unusual 14th-century castle surrounded by Bellver wood. It is situated high on a hill overlooking Palma and is more than aptly named as a place of great beauty.
Admission: full €1.70
Fornells
This whitewashed village is on a large shallow bay popular with windsurfers. Fornells has been made famous by its waterfront seafood restaurants, most of which serve up the local (and rather pricey) specialty, caldereta de Ilagosta, a lobster stew.
