Cala Galdana Holidays, Spain

Cala Galdana occupies a spectacular location in a horseshoe bay surrounded by sheer pine-clad limestone cliffs. The attractive white sand beach becomes very crowded in season but Menorca’s most idyllic beaches (Mitjana, Turqueta, Macarella and Trebaluger) are all within 30–40 minutes’ walk, or a short boat ride away. A river divides the resort and makes an attractive feature cutting inland to form the beautiful Algendar Gorge.

Cala'n Bosch - Son Xoriguer Holidays, Spain

On the southwest tip, this sprawling purpose-built resort of apartments and mid-rise hotels is favoured by British families and older couples. The main attraction is the beach — two attractive white sand coves backed by low cliffs — while the centre of the resort is the marina. Boats leave from here to the beautiful unspoiled beaches of Turqueta, Mitjana, Macarella and Son Saura. There is a popular water sports centre at Son Xoriguer.

Ciudadella de Menorca Holidays, Spain

Menorca’s most attractive town, Ciudadella is a charming unspoiled warren of elegant 18th- and 19th-century mansions, palaces and churches. At its heart is a typically Spanish gothic-baroque cathedral, a picturesque arcaded shopping street, Ses Voltes, and a quaint old market area. The shopping is the best on the island, and for nightlife and eating out it rivals the capital Mahon.

Mahon Holidays, Spain

In Menorca’s southeast corner, the characterful island capital perches high above a huge natural harbour. Architecturally Mahon is a mix of styles, its narrow streets and little squares well worth exploring. On the waterfront, restaurants serve the best island seafood while catamarans and glass-bottom boats ply pleasure cruises. Above, the Xoriguer gin distillery (open to visitors) is one of several reminders of British 18th-century colonialism.

Punta Prima Holidays, Spain

On the southeast tip of the island, Punta Prima is a modern resort, quiet during the week. At weekends the inhabitants of the island capital Mahon (eight kilometres north) come to enjoy its long white sandy beach, though currents mean that the sea can be dangerous; a flag system is in operation. Four kilometres away, Binibeca Vell is a very photogenic re-creation of a typical fisherman’s village, and worth a visit.

Son Bou Holidays, Spain

With almost three kilometres of fine golden-white sand, this wonderful south-coast beach is the longest on the island. Separated from the resort by dunes and reed beds, Son Bou is rarely crowded and offers a choice of water sports. Aside from two large beachside hotels the rest of this man-made resort is low-rise and low key.
