Popular Caleta de Fuste provides a home-from-home for north European visitors. The beach, like the neat and tidy resort, is man-made and provides a safe, family-friendly environment around a shallow bay. The port is a focus of activity with an aquarium set into the actual harbour, and is the departure point for dolphin-watching excursions. There is also a championship golf course within the resort.

The biggest tourist resort on Fuerteventura, Corralejo is split into old and new. The old part by the port is a tiny warren of narrow whitewashed alleyways leading, sooner or later, to “Music Square” – the centre of nocturnal activities. The new part comprises low-rise hotels and apartments. Kite surfers perform eye-catching turns on the water at the fabulous broad white-sand beach, backed by a pristine protected expanse of rolling dunes.

This quiet purpose-built resort marks the start of the Playa de Sotavento, a golden sandy beach that stretches for many miles, becoming picture-postcard perfect at neighbouring Risco del Paso. The beach may be less dramatic at this point but is has good facilities with sunshades, shops and a choice of beach bars close by. Windsurfing is very popular here with a school right in front of the hotels.

Jandía is synonymous with the spectacular Playa de Sotavento, where shallow limpid Caribbean-like turquoise waters and golden-white sands are backed by towering dunes and black volcanic cliffs. The Windsurfing World Cup is held here in summer and a windsurfing culture pervades the area. Just south of Jandía Playa, Morro Jable is an attractive little low-key resort which marks the end of the famous beach.
