Algeciras Holidays, Spain This industrial city and port is the gateway to North Africa – three hours by ferry to Morocco. Tarifa, one of the world’s windsurfing capitals, lies 17 kilometres south. There are spectacular views across the bay to the Rock of Gibraltar (14 kilometres). Gibraltar is in fact British territory, complete with red telephone boxes and warm beer. Visit St Michael’s Cave, its Siege Tunnels, and the famous Barbary Apes.

Its whitewashed labyrinthine old town climbs up and cascades back down the ridgeline. The main plaza is occupied by the town hall, two striking churches built on Arab fortresses, and an historic parador. One side of the square opens to a sweeping view over open countryside and a river gorge.

Jerez de la Frontera Holidays, SpainAn attractive little town, Jerez is famous for sherry (a corruption of its name) and its equestrian school. Several bodegas invite visitors to see how sherry is made. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is open to the public daily to watch training, with a show every Thursday. The big annual event is the Spring Horse Fair where the mounted sherry barons are prominent. Also see the 11th-century walls of the old Moorish palace.

La Linea de la Concepcion Holidays, Spain On the Bay of Algeciras, La Linea is a low-key resort and overspill residential area for the citizens of Gibraltar. Its seafront includes two long sandy beaches. Just inland is Casares, one of Andalusia’s most charming and photographed ipueblos blancos/i (white villages). Nearby, Castellar de la Frontera is another picturesque village. Golfers should head 20 kilometres up the coast to the world-class facilities of the Sotogrande Club.
