Germany’s third largest Baltic Sea island, Fehmarn is 18 kilometres from Denmark and connected to mainland Germany by a 963 metre long and 69 metre high suspension bridge. The 78 kilometres of coastline and endless sandy beaches attract many in summer while windsurfing, kite-surfing and sailing are popular all year round. The main village Burg has the island’s nightlife and the Sea Museum, the largest seawater aquarium in Germany.

Flensburg Holidays, Germany

Seven kilometres from the Danish border, Flensburg has been an important trading link between Germany and Scandinavia for centuries. The historic old town, influenced by 400 years of Danish rule, has many 13th-17th century buildings, and is home to the city’s cultural attractions. The 34 kilometre long firth is popular for water sports year round, especially sailing, while there are also adjacent cycling and walking paths.

Kiel Holidays, Germany

The centre for German shipbuilding, Kiel is also the country’s sailing capital. Kiel Week (last week in June) is one of the biggest sailing events in the world. Attractions in the old town include Kiel Maritime Museum and the 14th century church of St Nicholas with a sculpture by Ernst Barlach in front. The white-sand beach of Laboe, 10 kilometres north-east, has a Naval Memorial and a WWII submarine, now a museum.

Lubeck Holidays, Germany

Former queen of the Hanseatic League, the medieval city of Lubeck has some of the best Gothic architecture in Germany. The main landmark is the Holsten Gate with its cone spires, while the entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beach at Travemunde has been a popular resort since 1802. The home of marzipan, Lubeck also holds a famous Christmas market and has museums dedicated to writers Thomas Mann and Gunter Grass.

Fifteen kilometres north-east of Lubeck, Timmendorfer is a popular health retreat and seaside resort. The saline waters have reputed therapeutic qualities and there are numerous spas, clinics, saunas and a large swimming complex with indoor pools and a waterslide.
