Ibiza is a global clubbing capital and whether you want bellinis and bikinis or a thumping house music marathon, this is the place to go.

When to go

Tourism has a very clearly defined season on Ibiza and many places, particularly those related to the clubbing industry, are only open from May to October. If this doesn’t pose a problem, then winters are very mild and pleasant in the Balearics and there is a much more local feel. The major club opening and closing parties are in early May and late September.

How to get there

Ibiza’s Es Codolar airport is 5 miles south-west of Ibiza Town and is connected to London by British Airways from Gatwick.

Shopping

Carrer de la Verge has all manner of shops selling outré clubbing gear while classier wares are to be found down in the smart marina. The island has several ‘hippy’ markets: on Saturday mornings (11am) there’s a charming one at Les Dalies near Sant Carles, and in the evening (6pm) at the Sant Jordi hippodrome.

Must see

Don’t miss the sprawling castle complex which occupies the highest point of Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town. Built between the eighth and the 18th centuries as part of the city fortifications it has served as a prison, army garrison and government offices. From the southerly Sant Bernat rampart, the neighbouring island of Formentera is clearly visible on the horizon.

Family activities

The beaches are what make Ibiza magical and Platja d’en Bossa has golden sands and plenty of extra attractions such as carousels and bouncy castles. Ibiza’s largest water slide park, Aguamar (Platja d'en Bossa +34 971 396 790/313 811) is just next door. To explore the coast, there are plenty of boats running short trips from Ibiza port.

Local customs

Tipping. In restaurants tip around ten per cent for good service. If you sit at the bar, just round up the change to the nearest euro.

Dress codes. Nudity is fine on the beach but cover yourself from knee to shoulder when entering churches.
