Crete
Why go
Fabulous beaches and spectacular mountain scenery in the interior are good enough reasons to head to Crete, not forgetting the incredible history preserved at several sites around the island, including the famed Minoan palace of Knossos near Iraklion.
When to go
Spring is when Crete offers its best – temperatures are manageable, the flora is in glorious bloom and the overcrowding and stifling heat of the summer months have yet to set in. September and October can also be pleasant; the waters are still swimmable and most things still open. Although mild, winter has a far less vibrant atmosphere than the rest of the year.

How to get there
Crete is served by two main airports: Iraklion, which is 4km east of Iraklion city, and Hania, 15km northeast of Hania city. British Airways, through their subsidiary GBAirways, is the only scheduled service and only in the summer, flying into Iraklion.
Shopping
All four provincial capitals should wield good spots for some bargains. For an original gift look out for herbs in Iraklion; red saffron can be found at good prices here. Sandal shopping is the way to go in Rethymnon, while Hania produces excellent leather products plus you can pick up fine crafts, including traditional weaving around its harbourside shops.
Alternative Perspectives
Many visitors to Crete only consider the island a summer holiday destination, but, Crete is a perfectly viable option in the winter; the main archaeological sites and museums remain open and temperatures vary from a mild 16-23°C during the day.
Must see
While it may be tempting to spend all your time soaking up the rays on one of Crete's many glorious beaches, you must visit the 3,500-year-old remains of the Minoan palace of Knossos.
Family activities
Most of Crete’s attractions, such as its beaches and boat excursions, will be of interest to children. If the young ones aren't satisfied though, you could always take them to Limnoupolis Water Park, a vast complex 8km south of Hania (Varipetro, +30 2821 033 246, www.limnoupolis.gr) which along with an artifical river and giant waterslides, has kid-oriented activities such as a two mini soccer courts and a playground with educational games.
