Athens
Why go
As well as for the classical architecture, go for carnival (late February to March), a three-week binge prior to Lent when Athens’ nightlife is at its wildest.
When to go
Summers in Athens are generally dry with next to no rainfall and plenty of sunshine. Between July and September the temperature hovers at around 35°C (95°F), and visitors should take precautions against the sun and heat (drink lots of water, wear a hat, etc). Winter is wetter and cooler, with temperatures occasionally dropping to zero. However, mini-heatwaves with temperatures rising up into the mid 20s are not unheard of in winter.

How to get there
Athens is reached by flying to Eleftherios Venizelos airport, 17 miles north-east of Athens. It is served by flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton airports.
Shopping
Whatever you need in the way of retail therapy, Athens can provide it. And the good news is that most of its main shopping areas are within easy walking distance of each other. Different areas have their own specialities and price brackets, as shops here tend to congregate like with like. The central street, Ermou, although home to some of the most expensive real estate in Europe, tends to attract affordable high-street clothing and footwear brands.
Alternative Perspectives
Athens has a different life when the sun goes down and things don’t really get going until after midnight. This is especially the case with carnival (late February to March).
Must see
After admiring the classical world on offer at the Parthenon and related museums take in some fine Greek food before heading to a beach for some relaxation. Enjoying the after-dark scene could lead to an all nighter.
Family activities
The regular zoos, cinemas, playgrounds and parks can keep you and the kids entertained, though for something different try the hot weather attractions: Opropos Water Park, Agios Kosmas Go-Kart Centre and Allou! Fun Park – the closest thing Athens has to Disneyworld.
