Melbourne
Why go
Go for the friendly people and don’t miss the Spring Racing Carnival and the world’s best pizza.
When to go
The city’s climate is as notorious as it is unpredictable, when a drop of 30°C on a summer’s day is not unusual. September to April is therefore the best time to visit. Beyond the weather, Melbourne is home to many quality events worth considering including the Melbourne Cup (November), the Grand Prix and the Moomba Festival (both in March).

How to get there
Melbourne is served by Tullamarine airport. The most conventional long-haul route from Heathrow is via the US (usually Los Angeles). Flights going westbound usually stop over in Auckland. Eastbound city stop flights also present options in Asia. Qantas, Air New Zealand, United, British Airways, KLM and Lufthansa fly from London.
Shopping
Bourke Street includes the retail giants Myer (+61 39661 1111, www.myer.com.au) and David Jones (+61 39643 2222, www.davidjones.com.au). The high-end boutiques of Collins Street offer serious designer shopping. The Block Arcade at 282 Collins Street (+61 39654 5244) is a restored 19th-century plaza housing loads of little boutiques. If you have any change left over other major venues include Melbourne Central, Australia on Collins, Southbank and the Queen Victoria Market at the western end of Elizabeth Street (www.qvm.com.au).
Alternative Perspectives
Melbourne is best known for its cosmopolitan population, its river and its variable weather, but for an alternative view try to take in an evening game of AFL (Aussie Rules) at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) involving the ‘Pies’ (Collingwood Magpies).
Must see
For a classic jaunt along the Yarra on foot, from Federation Square head west via Southbank to the arty footbridge beside the Charles Grimes Bridge. Cross the river to arrive at Docklands via the landscaped parklands. Return to the city from the Southern Cross Train Station or take the free scenic tram from Docklands Esplanade.
Family activities
In poor weather the Children’s Museum within the Melbourne Museum is a safe bet, while in good weather the zoo or Luna Park, Lower Esplanade, St Kilda (especially after dark) won’t disappoint.
Sports activities
