Why go

The real action is underwater. If you have never tried diving and you are physically able, an introductory dive is a must. Better still, do a course with multiple dives. Landlubbers try Kuranda via the rainforest gondola.

When to go

Cairns enjoys a tropical climate offering idyllic conditions most of the year, but the summer wet season from November to March, with its high humidity and the odd cyclone, is best avoided. April to October is considered the peak season.

Sightseeing , Restaurants , Nightlife , Budget

How to get there

Cairns is more than 24 hours from London. The most conventional route is via the US (usually Los Angeles). Cairns has an international airport but most long-haul flights from the UK still terminate in Melbourne or Sydney where you will be required to change terminals for a domestic connection (Qantas, Virgin Blue or Jetstar). A flight with Air New Zealand via Auckland provides other options.

Shopping

Cairns has some excellent shopping with everything on offer, from opals to art works. The Pier Complex provides the main focus. Cairns Night Markets on Abbott Street is an eclectic mix of more than 100 stalls selling a rather predictable array of arts, crafts, clothing, food and souvenirs. It’s open daily from 4.30pm-11pm. Given the colourful aesthetics above and below the watermark, photo print galleries are commonplace. Try the Ocean Galleries on Lake Street for images of the barrier’s multifarious marine life, while for general panoramics don’t miss the works of the ubiquitous Peter Lik at the Wilderness Gallery on Shields Street.

Alternative Perspectives

Beyond the obvious milieu of the reef, try the cooling elevations of the Atherton Tablelands or the Skyline rainforest cableway in transit to Kuranda.

Must see

One way or another – either wet or dry – you must see the reef. The outer reef is recommended where the water clarity is better and species generally larger and more diverse. To top up the tan and for a little people watching don’t miss the city’s lagoon complex.

Family activities

Cairns caters well for families and with so many activities on offer no member of the family will be short of something to do. The manmade lagoon on the Esplanade is a favourite spot, is free and has the added bonus of lifeguards. Further afield you can sample the delights of the reef on Green Island, which is the most accessible of the inner islands.
