Air: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY) (website: www.flymsy.com) is located 29km (18 miles) from New Orleans’ city centre (travel time – 20 to 30 minutes). Public buses run to the city centre every 15 to 20 minutes (weekdays) and every 30 minutes (weekends), daily 0600-1830. Greyhound (see below) also has buses from the airport to many destinations. Mississippi Coast Service (Coastliner) provides a shuttle service to the Gulf Coast and destinations en route, making several trips 0800-2330 daily. St Tammany Tours provides a service between the airport and Lake Pontchartrain (north shore); this 24-hour service requires advance reservation. Taxis are available 24 hours a day, and limousines are also available at the airport. Facilities include a bank, shops, snack bars, restaurant/bar, post office and car hire (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National and Thrifty).

Approximate flight times: From New Orleans to Atlanta is one hour 25 minutes, to Chicago is two hours 20 minutes, to Los Angeles is four hours 10 minutes, to Miami is one hour 45 minutes and to New York is two hours 50 minutes.

River: The Delta Queen Steamboat Company (tel: (504) 586 0631 or (800) 543 1949 (toll-free); website: www.deltaqueen.com) runs scheduled paddlewheel cruises up and down the Mississippi River, stopping at several cities. The New Orleans Steamboat Company (tel: (504) 586 8777 or (800) 233 2628 (toll-free); website: www.steamboatnatchez.com) offers a number of harbour cruise options. Information and tickets are available at booths behind Jackson Brewery and the aquarium in New Orleans.

Rail: Amtrak trains serve New Orleans (tel: (800) 872 7245 (toll-free); website: www.amtrak.com). Services include the ‘Sunset Limited’, which links Los Angeles with Orlando (Florida) via New Orleans; the ‘Crescent’, which links New Orleans with New York via Atlanta (Georgia); and the ‘City of New Orleans’, which heads north from New Orleans to Chicago via Memphis (Tennessee). Trains depart from New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, located at 1001 Loyola Avenue.

Road: Greyhound buses connect all Louisiana’s major towns and cities with destinations throughout the USA (tel: (800) 229 9424 (toll-free); website: www.greyhound.com). Buses stop at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal (see above).
Approximate driving times: From New Orleans to Mobile is three hours, to Houston is six hours, to Birmingham is seven hours and to Memphis is eight hours. All times are based on nonstop driving at or below the applicable speed limits.

Urban: Bus: The famous ‘Streetcar Named Desire’ that Blanche Dubois dreamt of has been replaced, rather prosaically, by a bus. However, bus services are extensive and available throughout the city. The Regional Transit Authority offers a VisiTour pass allowing unlimited rides on buses and streetcars all day. Streetcar: These still run a 24-hour service (with a reduced service at night) on St Charles Avenue and Carrollton in New Orleans, starting from Canal Street. A new streetcar runs every 15 minutes Mon-Fri 0600-2300 and Sat-Sun 0700-2300, along the riverfront between the Convention Center and Esplanade Avenue. Car hire: A national driving licence and a major credit card are needed to hire a car. Horsecab: Horse-drawn carriages offer a scenic means of transport through the French Quarter.
