Lima,
Tours of the City
Walking Tours Because of the pollution and the enormity of Lima, it is probably best for visitors to avoid lengthy walking tours. These are available but need to be booked on an individual basis, through a good agent such as Lima Tours, Calle Belen 1040 (tel: (01) 424 5110; website: www.limatours.com.pe). It is better for sightseers to restrict a tour to a small area and enjoy stopping off in local cafés for coffee and churros (cylindrical doughnuts). The Municipalidad de Lima (tel: (01) 427 6080, ext. 222; website: www.munlima.gob.pe) organises a number of free, short walking tours every month.
Bus Tours Private bus tours of the city can be arranged through Lima Tours,
Calle Belen 1040 (tel: (01) 424 5110; website: www.limatours.com.pe). These take in the main squares as well as key attractions, such as the cathedral, a colonial mansion and the Miraflores and San Isidro suburbs. Tours depart twice a day, from the city centre. The four‐hour tour costs PEN90.50/US$25 per person, including entry tickets and English guide. Another option is the Urbanito (tel: (01) 225 6462) bus, which departs every 20 minutes from the main square. Taking approximately one hour and a half hours, tours are in Spanish only and cost PEN7/US$2.
