Telephone: Deutsche Telekom is the main network supplier. Most public phone booths in Munich take phonecards (Telefonkarte), available for DM12 or DM50 from post offices and newsagents. Cheap rates for national and international calls are 1800-0800 Monday to Friday and at weekends.

Mobile phones:
Frequencies for mobile phone use in Germany are GSM 900 and GSM 1800. Visitors from the USA and Canada should obtain a European-standard handset and a SIM card in order to make a call in Munich. Mobile phones can be hired from Multiplex GmbH (tel: (089) 21 10 55 50) at Promenadeplatz 6 for DM19 per day (8-30 days) and DM29 per day (1-7 days).

Post:
The main post office is located at the Hauptbahnhof, Bahnhofplatz 1 and is open 0700-2000 Monday to Friday, 0800-1600 Saturday and 0900-1500 Sunday. Otherwise, post office hours are generally 0800-1800 Monday to Friday and 0800-1200 Saturday. Smaller branches may close for lunch. Stamps are also available from hotels and vending machines.

Courier services:
DHL (tel: (01803) 258 258) and TNT (tel: (089) 317 720 (south) or 317 790 (north)) both provide services.

Internet access:
Times Square Online Bistro, Bayerstrasse 10a (tel: (089) 550 8800; web site: www.times-square.net), is open 0800-0100 daily and access costs DM4.50 for 15 minutes.

Press:
One of the most influential German daily newspapers - the Süddeutsche Zeitung - is published in Munich. Other widely read regional newspapers include Abendzeitung, Münchener Merkur, TZ and Bild München. Most major international newspapers or magazines are available at the Internationale Presse stand in the Hauptbahnhof. Tourist information, articles and entertainment listings can be found in the monthly English-language magazine Munich Found (web site: www.munichfound.com).

TV and radio:
The Bayerische Rundfunk, based in Munich, is the state broadcasting company. Several smaller regional radio and TV stations also broadcast from the city.
