Copenhagen,
Getting There By Water
Københavns Havn (Port of Copenhagen), Nordre Toldbod 24 (tel: 3347 9999; fax: 3347 9933; e‐mail: cphport@cphport.dk; ), is Denmark’s largest port and the most important cruise destination in Northern Europe. Most cruise ships that dock in Copenhagen are heading for the Norwegian fjords or the Baltic. These big summer cruise ships dock along Langelinie Pier, which is 15 minutes’ walk further out from Nyhavn, where the year‐round ferries listed below currently dock. Ultimately, however, Langelinie Pier will accommodate all ships that dock in Copenhagen. The development of the area is well underway and facilities are extensive, including an information centre, telephones, lounges, various shops and an increasing number of pierside cafés and restaurants.
Ferry services: High‐speed catamarans to Malmö in Sweden are run by Pilen (tel: 3332 1260; fax: 3332 2794) and depart from Havnegade 28, on the hour Monday to Friday 0900‐2300 (journey time – 45 minutes), with additional trips on Friday and Saturday at 0900 and 0100. A one‐way adult ticket costs Dkk40 Monday to Thursday and Dkk50 Friday to Sunday. Although the ferry is marketed as a commuter service, many Danes and Swedes seem to use it as a booze‐cruise.
An alternative service is run by Scandlines (tel: 3315 1515; e‐mail: scandlines@scandlines.dk; ). Holders of the Copenhagen Card (see Public Transport in Getting Around) are entitled to a discount on this service. There are also services to Oslo (journey time – 16 hours) run by DFDS Seaways (tel: 3342 3342; fax: 3342 3159; ) and Swinoujscie, Poland (journey time – 10 hours) run by Polferries (tel: 4012 1700; fax: 4097 0370).
Bornholmstrafikken (tel: 5695 1866; fax: 5691 0766; ) runs daily ferry services between Copenhagen and Ronne, on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic (journey time – 7 hours).
Transport to the city: The port is approximately a ten‐ to 15‐minute walk from the centre of Copenhagen, four kilometres (two and a half miles) from Central Station and 15km (nine miles) from the airport. Bus route 26E passes along Havnegade past the ferry terminal and taxis are readily available.
