Atlanta,
Further Distractions
Underground Atlanta Constructed on the underpinnings of early Atlanta, this one time railroad gulch (ravine) is now a spirited urban marketplace, featuring restaurants, speciality shops, street vendors and entertainment emporiums, which are all underground. This is perfect for a less than perfect day as Underground Atlanta can be accessed direct from the MARTA station at Five Points. There is, however, very little in Underground Atlanta that is not replicated in many other malls in the USA.

Atlanta Botanical Garden This is where Atlanta takes time to stop and smell the roses. Tropical, desert and endangered plants from around the world are shown year round in the Fuqua Conservatory, just 4.8km (three miles) from Downtown. The gardens are perched on the edge of Piedmont Park and contain more than 3000 ornamental plants in the display gardens.

Center For Puppetry Arts This centre houses a museum, as well as a theatre and workshop spaces. The purpose behind it is to explore puppetry as an ancient and popular art form. The museum’s permanent collection is home to over 900 puppets and 1000 posters – making it the largest of its kind in America. The most famous of the puppets on display is probably Wayland Flower’s Madame. As well as hosting temporary exhibitions, the museum also includes a library, which holds an extensive collection of video performances, including one by Madame herself. Performances in the theatre are in one of two series – either the family series, where admission includes the museum and a puppet‐making workshop, or the adult series, which are usually evening performances.
