Air: Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) (website: http://phoenix.gov/AVIATION) is 6km (4 miles) from the city centre. In 2003, the airport saw an increase in passenger numbers, which has pushed it up in the rankings to sixth busiest airport in the USA and 11th busiest in the world; over 1 million passengers are international arrivals. The airport is linked by a Valley Metro bus service that runs every 25 minutes 0600-1830 (travel time – 22 minutes). Taxis are available 24 hours a day, as is a door-to-door limousine service and a super-shuttle service; the latter departs every 15 minutes (0900-2100), less frequently at night.
Tucson International (TUS) (website: www.tucsonairport.com) is 16km (10 miles) from the city centre. Taxis and shared-ride vans that travel door-to-door run 24 hours a day; a local Sun Tran bus service is also available, although these are slow.


Approximate flight times: From Phoenix to Atlanta is three hours 30 minutes, to Chicago is three hours 20 minutes, to Los Angeles is one hour 25 minutes, to Miami is four hours 10 minutes and to New York is four hours 30 minutes.

Rail: Three Amtrak (tel: (800) 872 7245 (toll-free); website: www.amtrak.com) trains run a weekly service from downtown Tucson, on the ‘Sunset Limited’ line (Benson–Tucson–Maricopa–Yuma) between Los Angeles and New Orleans. There is no rail link between Tucson and Phoenix, although an Amtrak Thruway bus service connects the cities. There is a daily service from Flagstaff on the ‘Southwest Chief’ line (Winslow–Flagstaff– Williams Junction–Kingman) between Los Angeles and Chicago. The West Rail Pass is available for 15 or 30 days unlimited travel between the Pacific Coast and as far east as Chicago and New Orleans. The Far West Rail Pass is also available for 15 or 30 days travel, covering the region from the Pacific Coast as far east as Alburquerque (New Mexico) and El Paso (Texas). First-class sleeping cars can be reserved for an additional fee.

Road: Most major routes run east–west. Bus: Greyhound buses (tel: (800) 229 9424 (toll-free); website: www.greyhound.com) are available to many destinations throughout the USA. Gray Line, with offices in Phoenix and Tucson, offers two-hour to two-day local sightseeing tours.

Approximate driving times: From Phoenix to Tucson is two hours, to Las Vegas is five hours 30 minutes, to Los Angeles is six hours, to San Diego is six hours, to El Paso is six hours 30 minutes and to Albuquerque is nine hours.

Approximate bus journey times: From Phoenix to Tucson is two hours, to Los Angeles is seven hours, to El Paso is seven hours 45 minutes, to Las Vegas is eight hours, to San Diego is eight hours and to Albuquerque is 10 hours.

Urban: Bus: Phoenix Valley Metro buses run every 30 minutes throughout the day and every 10 to 20 minutes during peak traffic hours, although stops are spaced far apart; schedules are available at the downtown terminal, at First Avenue and Washington Street. Tickets for local and costlier express fares are sold in books of 10; daily and monthly local passes are available. A free DASH bus service runs Mon-Fri 0630-2300 between the Arizona Center and the State Capitol (downtown). A bus service links Phoenix and Scottsdale, and special dial-a-ride services operate in both cities Mon-Sat 0630-1000. Tucson also has a local bus network. Car hire: Easily available in Phoenix and other major cities, with many car hire firms offering special weekend or weekly rates.
