Dumfries, Galloway & the Borders

Scotland, Dumfries, Galloway & the Borders

Dumfries, Galloway & the Borders: -

These regions are the southernmost in Scotland. Much of their area is lowland, rising in the north towards the Southern Uplands. The Borders area was the setting for many of the battles which were regularly fought between Scotland and England through the centuries. It is a region of lush green hills and moorlands, occasionally pitted with valleys, gorges and roaring waterfalls. The area's wealth allowed the construction of several outstanding ecclesiastical buildings, notably the abbeys at Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose. The ancient border towns of Selkirk, Galashiels, Peebles and Hawick are still the centre of a thriving wool, tweed and knitwear industry. Abbotsford in this area was the home of Sir Walter Scott.
The region of Dumfries and Galloway consists of open, undulating countryside, lakes and pine forests. Towns such as Dumfries, home of Robert Burns; Kirkcudbright, a former artist's colony; and the charming market town of Gatehouse of Fleet are all popular centres. Country houses, castles, gardens and special interest museums can be found throughout the area. Quiet country roads, quality accommodation to suit any budget, and local crafts and craftsmen at work all add to the enjoyment of a visit.
