British Virgin Islands The British Virgin Islands make up the larger part of an archipelago of more than 60 islands and cays forming the northern extremity of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. The British Virgin Islands comprise 56 islands, rocks and cays, but only 16 are inhabited. The islands are volcanic in origin, with the exception of Anegada, which is formed of coral and limestone and is the lowest lying.
