Food
Traditional Turkish cuisine blends Turkic, Greek, Persian and Arabic influences, and varies considerably by region. You can expect to find plenty of wonderfully fresh vegetables, cheeses, and, especially in meat dishes, fresh and dried fruit. “Meze” are well worth a try – a selection of different dishes that can be eaten either as an appetizer or a main course. Turkish restaurants are normally very welcoming to children and, if your younger companions don’t fancy the local cuisine, many will offer more familiar foods. As a note, if your kids enjoy pizza, Turkish “pide” is often a much tastier alternative.
Entertainment
The entertainment options offered by Turkey are vast and vary greatly by region. The country’s beaches are numerous and often unspoilt – kids will adore building sandcastles on the Turquoise Coast, and the Datça peninsula is truly stunning. Istanbul is one of the world’s most exotic cities, and you’ll never be short of things to do there. Start with a boat ride along the Bosphorus Strait, which will fascinate adults and children alike, and give you a fantastic view of the bustling city. And, if your children enjoy history, there really are few more astonishing locations than Ephesus – thought to be the best-preserved Roman city in the Mediterranean, and home to the Temple of Artemis (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world) and the Celsus Library.
