Family holidays in Mexico

A stunningly beautiful country, with wonderful scenery, unspoilt beaches, Mayan ruins and a tropical climate, Mexico is a brilliant destination for a family holiday. The different regions of Mexico are extremely varied in terms of cuisine, language, climate and landscape, and every region offers something that will captivate children. Prices are budget-friendly, the mega-resorts provide everything even the most demanding child could wish for and, outside of Mexico City, the country is comfortingly safe.

When to go

Mexico is a great all year round destination, with high temperatures in summer and guaranteed year round sunshine.

Top tip

Try and catch a local fiesta.

Food

Traditional Mexican cuisine is varied, colourful, tasty and, if you’re lucky, cheap. The food does vary by region, with coastal regions offering fresh seafood, while northern states present more beef- and meat-based dishes. Enchiladas (a corn tortilla stuffed with cheese, vegetables, seafood and/or meat) and fresh green or “Mexicana” salsas can be a delicious combination. Meals involving chillies can be very spicy, but most restaurants will reduce or remove the peppers if requested. And, with America one of Mexico’s neighbours, if your children don’t like the look of local cuisine, you’ll normally be able to order more familiar dishes such as steaks and hamburgers.

Entertainment

While the mega-hotels of areas like Cancun and Acapulco can make for an easy, convenient holiday, the rural regions of Mexico will provide you with an entirely different and exciting experience. If your children are very young, the resorts might be more practical but, if your companions are a little older, avoiding the big hotels will certainly lead to a unique holiday. Entertainment options will vary by region and, while touring the incredible Mayan ruins might not be to all kids’ tastes, the beautiful beaches, fantastic water sports, snorkelling and eco-reserves such as Sian Ka’an Biosphere will fascinate most youngsters...
