Family holidays in Malta

Malta offers a combination of sun, sand, sea and history that is almost unbeatable when it comes to family holidays. The island, although very small (315km2), not only offers an idyllic Mediterranean climate, dramatic scenery and clear, warm waters, but is also of undeniable historic importance. If a mixture of sun, diving and ancient history appeals to your family, Malta really is the perfect destination.

When to go

Late winter and spring offer ideal weather conditions and far better prices than the roasting summer.

Top tip

Be sure to visit the Megalithic temples on Malta and Gozo, the oldest stone structures in the world.

Food

Food in Malta bears the influences of Mediterranean cuisine, and many restaurants limit themselves to pasta, pizza and the English invasion of fish and chips. If your children are willing to eat something different, though, it’s worth looking for traditional Maltese cuisine. The island offers some truly delicious dishes, including aljotta (a fish soup with tomatoes, herbs and rice), pastizzi (flaky pastry filled with cheese or vegetables), fresh seafood (local specialities include sea bass, swordfish, tuna and lobster), vegetables and fantastic Maltese breads.

Entertainment

Malta boasts great beaches, clear waters, and beautiful scenery, but its impressive history is the true gem in its crown. The walled capital Mdina is utterly elegant, while the Ggantiji temples on the nearby island of Gozo are the oldest freestanding structures on earth. If this isn’t to your children’s tastes, though, the beaches should be, and the snorkelling and diving around Malta are wonderful for the whole family.
