Family holidays in Hong Kong
If you’re looking for an exotic and exciting family holiday destination, Hong Kong is just the ticket. China as a whole is extremely family-oriented, and you’ll find your children are welcome just about everywhere. And Hong Kong offers far more than shopping and eating – the city’s parks (particularly Hong Kong Park and Kowloon Park) will give your kids a chance to stretch their legs, while the Star Ferry will give you a breather from the busy streets and a view of Hong Kong that will impress the whole family.
When to go
Spring and winter are perfect if you're looking for warm and sunny weather. Summer can be very hot and humid.
Top tip
Take a ride on the Star Ferry; always popular with children.
Food
When it comes to eating as a family in Hong Kong, Dim Sum can be the ideal format. It’s an informal, laidback affair anyway, so you’ll fit in, and restaurants are nearly always extremely welcoming towards children. Dim Sum’s a real experience, too, and will entertain your kids while you savour the flavours. And, if you’re worried your children will prefer more familiar options, most establishments will offer less exotic and unusual fare in addition to local delicacies.
Entertainment
Walking through the markets and the bustle of the Hong Kong streets can be entertaining enough in itself but, if you or your children find yourself wanting more, the city has plenty to offer. Disneyland and Ocean Park are great for kids, though the latter is quite hilly and can be hard work if you have smaller children. The beautiful area around the Tai Tam reservoir is perfect for hiking and, if you’d prefer something requiring less exertion, you can even relax on the beach at the rather unfortunately named Repulse Bay.
