Family holidays in Egypt
Family travel in Egypt boasts a near-unbeatable mix of sea, sun, and truly incomparable ancient monuments. The country as a whole offers an excellent support network for tourists, and children will be well cared for. One note of caution - Egypt can be exceptionally hot and sunny, so do cover yourself and any younger members of the family before venturing out.
When to go
Spring is a great time to visit, when the weather is warm but not uncomfortably so as it can be in the summer months.
Top tip
Tipping is part of the Egyptian culture.
Food
Dining out in Egypt can range from sandwich bars to five-course meals. Evening meals are usually served a little later (from 8 until midnight), which is worth bearing in mind if you’ve got little ones with you. At its best, Egyptian cuisine includes wonderful naturally ripened fruit and vegetables, succulent meat (especially lamb), fish and fresh spices. Food in southern Egypt is zestier, and more influenced by North African cuisine, but no Egyptian food is particularly spicy. Children are welcome in most restaurants, and many will offer a more “European“ menu if one is requested.
Entertainment
The Pyramids and Egypt’s seemingly endless list of historical sites need no introduction but, if you’re fearing they’re all Egypt has to offer, you needn’t. Egypt’s beaches are magnificent, Cairo’s old town is stunning, and diving in the Red Sea is an unforgettable experience. For younger children, camel rides, amusement parks and boat trips will bring big smiles to small faces.
