Cinder cones
  David Muench/Corbis
Rust-coloured cinder cones, some a thousand feet high, protrude through the fog in Haleakala's crater. The term "crater" is actually a misnomer, for the gigantic bowl-shaped depression was actually formed by erosion. You can peer into the bowl from several vantage points, or hike through its moonlike landscape on a series of trails.
