Mayan welcome
  Andre Gallant/The Image Bank
Many of Cozumel's residents are of Mayan descent and take pride in maintaining traditional customs and dress. You'll see beautifully crafted wares by Mayan artisans in local shops. In pre-Columbian times Mayan women from mainland Mexico would journey to Cozumel to worship Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. You can tour the ruins of that shrine, now known as San Gervacio.
