A few large cedars and ponderosa pines escaped Tahoe's severe deforestation in the mid-1800s, when the fabled Comstock Lode and other silver mines required large timbers for their shafts. By the 1920s, Lake Tahoe was a summer destination for the wealthy. Today you'll find everything from primitive campgrounds to ritzy resorts, and even the Ponderosa Ranch featured in the popular Bonanza television series.
