Danish colonists built brick-red Fort Christian in the late 1600s to guard the harbour of Charlotte Amalie, named after the queen of Denmark. The fort is the oldest building on the island, and is now a history museum and art centre. In nearby Government House you can see works by the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, who was born and raised on St. Thomas.
