Each side of the island plays up its distinct personality. Dutch St. Maarten welcomes cruise ships, casinos, and of course, windmills. French St. Martin likes to think of itself as more sophisticated, certainly when it comes to cuisine. But you'll find the border virtually nonexistent as you travel back and forth.
